Course Information
The knowledge, preservation and maintenance of existing infrastructures are some of the most challenging matters facing modern civilization. It involves, in inextricable patterns, factors belonging to different fields coupled with the requirements of safety and operations.
For these reasons, it is fundamental to carry out digital strategies and technologies to know and predict the conditions of existing structures. The presentation is focused on existing railway tunnels in Italy, which has some of the highest and oldest tunnels in the world.
ETS introduced a new method for the diagnostic of existing tunnels through an innovative multi-dimensional survey system for geometrization and diagnostics (ARCHITA) as well as a new approach for the management and identification of the Risk for Existing Tunnels (MIRET). The approach belongs to the digital strategies for infrastructure maintenance that are very fast and minimally invasive.
A new tunnel modelling and design solution, OpenTunnel, is used and integrated to model and analyze the existing asset, aiming to create digital twins of the real structures. The potential of the software and the proposed workflow involving OpenTunnel is shown with different case studies throughout the presentation.
