This webcast provides a brief introduction to helical piles and its applications in different types of soil conditions. In addition, we will be talking about the theory behind the development of load capacity by helical piles and its estimation.

The Acceptance Criteria for Helical Foundation Systems (AC 358) provides the different capacities that must be evaluated to quantify the capacity of the helical pile system. One critical parameter that effects the pile capacity is the unbraced length of a pile system. Factors such as soil condition, soil strength, type of load application and site conditions are some of the factors that determine the design unbraced length.

Helical piles can also be battered to resist both compression and tension forces. Based on the batter angle, helical piles can act as tieback anchors. Battered helical pile/tiebacks are used in retaining walls, machine foundations, utility towers, boardwalk, etc. Helical piles also are used in new construction, temporary and permanent support of existing structures, remediation/renovation projects, etc.

The webcast will discuss some of the advantages of helical pile systems under certain soil/site conditions. Quality control during helical pile installation is as critical as in any construction job. The development of quality-control parameters can be achieved by performing load tests and monitored by recording the pile installation torques. Compression and tension capacities can be verified by performing ASTM Standard Test Methods for Deep Foundation Elements. In conclusion, we will look at some case studies involving the application of helical piles.
